Health Benefits Of Cinnamon

cinnamonCinnamon has been used as a spice for many foods and drinks throughout the ages.  Scientists studying the health benefits of cinnamon have found it helps your body fight off disease.  Cinnamon offers nutritional benefits and preventative health advantages.  Only a small amount of cinnamon is needed daily to realize the health benefits of this wonder spice.

Cinnamon And Diabetes?

I find this fascinating especially as a type 1 diabetic.  This is the news that is most exciting for people who respond to low-carb diets, since most (or at least a substantial percentage) of us are probably insulin resistant or diabetic.  Several studies have shown improved insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control by taking as little as ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day.  Improving insulin resistance can help in weight control as well as decreasing the risk for heart disease, so this has a lot of people interested.  Although the results of preliminary studies are somewhat mixed, the majority of the research seems to be pointing in the direction of cinnamon being beneficial.

Cinnamon Boosts Brain Function?cinnamon

Some research suggests that the aroma and flavor of cinnamon acts as a cognitive stimulant, possibly improving working memory, visual-motor speed and virtual recognition memory.  Positive early results have encouraged researchers in the area of Chemoreception Sciences to see if cinnamon may be beneficial for slowing or alleviating age-related cognitive decline.

Cinnamon Provides Additional Fiber?

In addition to its unique essential oils, cinnamon is an excellent source of fiber and the trace mineral manganese while also a very good source of calcium.  The combination of calcium and fiber in cinnamon is important and can be helpful for the prevention of several different conditions.  Both calcium and fiber can bind to bile salts and help remove them from the body.  By removing bile, fiber helps to prevent the damage that certain bile salts can cause to colon cells, thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer.  In addition, when bile is removed by fiber, the body must break down cholesterol in order to make new bile.  This process can help to lower high cholesterol levels, which can be helpful in preventing atherosclerosis and heart disease.  For sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome, the fiber in cinnamon may also provide relief from constipation or diarrhea.

 Cinnamon And Weight Loss?

Absolutely!  Cinnamon Creates a Chemical Reaction.  When cinnamon is consumed, the body actually reacts chemically to digest the

cinnamoncinnamon.  This reaction actually speeds up the metabolism in order to offset the extra heat that is occurring as a result of the cinnamon.  When the metabolism speeds up, you are burning more calories and you will lose weight more quickly.

With a little bit of creativity, there are many ways that cinnamon can be added to your regular meals.  Sprinkle cinnamon on your cereal for breakfast in the morning, sprinkle some on a pear, apple, or other fruit for an afternoon snack, sprinkle it on yogurt, or add some to your coffee or tea.  It doesn’t matter how you consume the cinnamon as long as you eat it on a regular basis.  Keep a container of cinnamon readily available so that you can add it to your meals every day.

Originally born and raised in Woburn Massachusetts (love my Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins!) I made my trek northward to the beautiful state of Maine back in October 2003 after marrying my college sweetheart. Diagnosed back in 2006 (out of the blue), at a routine doctors visit. Diabetes has single handed-ly been the biggest obstacle that I have faced in my life. At the time I had no idea of what a roller coaster ride I would be in for, I mean really, what's a couple finger sticks a day and a couple shots of insulin for food...this will be easy, I got this! Well 2 ER visits later, I quickly found out that this was no joke, and if I wanted to see my little ones grow up, this was something that I needed to take seriously! Little by little as we began to digest all of the information that was being thrown at us...fast acting insulin, short acting insulin, lancets, test meters, test strips, ketone sticks, carb counting, food groups, glucagon emergency kits, insulin pumps, glucose monitors...OMG, my head was spinning like a top!! After a couple of crazy years, I can happily say that I am well controlled and feel absolutely amazing! Not to be lost in all of this either is the amazing support of my wife. She has been my rock! She has been with me every step of the way, from 2am finger sticks to helping me change out a failed pump in the middle of a crowded restaurant. She truly is an amazing wife and mom and I can't imaging my life without her love and support- love you babe!
