5 Diet Mistakes That Age You

5 diet mistakes that age youGood nutrition is fundamental for a healthy, age defying skin.  Even if you are trying to follow the rules and embrace a healthy lifestyle, you could be making mistakes that age you.  You don’t feel it right now, as these aging effects start at about age 35 and increase rapidly after that, but if you’re willing to look younger at old age, you should start now and avoid the following 5 nutrition mistakes that age you.

Unbalanced Diet Can Age You?

When your diet isn’t balanced, your skin, hair, and nails will suffer. Cutting calories can deprive your body of certain nutrients that promote healthy cell division, cell regeneration, and overall skin tone and texture, explains David E. Bank, MD, FAAD, director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, NY.  “The skin also requires essential fatty acids–which the body can’t produce on its own–to maintain hydration.  A diet that’s too low in fat could cause dry skin, hair loss, and brittle nails. “Other key youth-boosting nutrients include vitamins A, C, and E.  Being deficient in A can cause acne, dry hair, dry skin, and broken fingernails. Get your daily vitamin A fix by eating five baby carrots each day.  A lack of vitamin C can affect collagen synthesis (the “glue” that binds our ligaments, bones, blood vessels, and skin), impair wound healing, and make you more likely to bruise. Incorporate vitamin C – rich foods in the form of citrus fruits, brussels sprouts, peppers, and leafy greens.  Low levels of vitamin E can result in easy bruising and cause chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis to flare up.

Overindulging In Sweets Can Age You?

Oh No, time to put down the cream puffs!  Desserts are always tempting (I can attest to this first hand) 😉 and even when you are on a diet, trying to lose weight, eating a piece of cake or a biscuit from time to time is recommended.  However, when you overindulge in sweets, your health and looks may suffer.  Too much sugar in your body leads to premature ageing of the skin because the breakdown of sugars, called glycation, damages the collagen and thus, the skin is less smooth and firm.  Sugar-packed doughnuts, for example, actually damage the elastin that keeps skin firm and youthful.  In order to maintain a beautiful skin for when you will be in your 40s, you should limit the loss of collagen by sweetening up your coffee, tea or homemade sweets with stevia or other easily digested herbal sweeteners.

Drastic Diet and Age?

Who would have thought that a weight loss diet could actually age you!  The general trend in people trying to get rid of their muffin top is to cut fat, carbs and calories.  Though you may shed a few pounds, you are actually aging due to this drastic cut.  Why?  That’s because you create an imbalance within your body.  Your nails, hair and skin are deprived of certain nutrients such as youth-boosting vitamins A, C, and E.  To prevent premature aging, your body needs fats (otherwise, you will experience dry skin, hair loss, and brittle nails) and calories that promote healthy cell division and cell regeneration.

Go With Green Tea Over Coffee?

I know, I know…I will probably strike a nerve with this one, especially with all you Java Joe’s that are running around (I fall into this category by the way) :-).  Recent research suggests that green and black tea contain protective compounds such as EGCG and flavonoids.  EGCG as well as flavonoids actually help prevent skin cancers and the breakdown of collagen, the cause of wrinkles.  More collagen, more youthful appearance.

 You Avoid Fish and Fat?

Why is this going to age you?  Fish and healthy oils (like olive) offer the best source of omega-3 essential fatty acids ,which help prevent memory loss.  “These fatty acids are part of the brain’s building blocks,” explains Andrew Weil, MD, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. “If you’re not getting enough in your diet, the architecture of the brain becomes weak, and brain function, including memory, suffers.” But it’s not only the amount of omega-3s that’s important; the balance between omega-3s and omega-6s is equally crucial. “Our diets are flooded with omega-6 fatty acids, mostly from processed foods,” says Dr. Weil. “The more omega-6s you eat, the more omega-3s you need to balance your levels.  Unfortunately, most of us do not eat enough omega-3s and are eating too many omega-6s.”

About the Author ()

Originally born and raised in Woburn Massachusetts (love my Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins!) I made my trek northward to the beautiful state of Maine back in October 2003 after marrying my college sweetheart. We began a family in 2004 and I am happy to say that we have 4 happy, healthy, beautiful children that bring an amazing amount of joy to our lives! I am also a type 1 diabetic. Diagnosed back in 2006 (out of the blue), at a routine doctors visit. Diabetes has single handed-ly been the biggest obstacle that I have faced in my life. At the time I had no idea of what a roller coaster ride I would be in for, I mean really, what's a couple finger sticks a day and a couple shots of insulin for food...this will be easy, I got this! Well 2 ER visits later, I quickly found out that this was no joke, and if I wanted to see my little ones grow up, this was something that I needed to take seriously! Little by little as we began to digest all of the information that was being thrown at acting insulin, short acting insulin, lancets, test meters, test strips, ketone sticks, carb counting, food groups, glucagon emergency kits, insulin pumps, glucose monitors...OMG, my head was spinning like a top!! After a couple of crazy years, I can happily say that I am well controlled and feel absolutely amazing! Not to be lost in all of this either is the amazing support of my wife. She has been my rock! She has been with me every step of the way, from 2am finger sticks to helping me change out a failed pump in the middle of a crowded restaurant. She truly is an amazing wife and mom and I can't imaging my life without her love and support- love you babe!
