5 Healthy Habits You Can Use Everyday!

healthyIf you want to feel healthy, look beautiful and feel young, you’ll eat a generous variety of super foods that have been proven to work wonders on the human body.  If you’ve been living a sedentary lifestyle, living at McDonalds, Arby’s, KFC and the like, then stop!  By starting a healthy regime now, you will be amazed at the dividends that it will pay down the road 🙂

Healthy Habit #1  Get More Sleep

Sleep is the golden hour when our body does its healing and repairing.  Enough sleep is essential for both deep and superficial repairs, meaning everything from regenerating adrenal glands to healing that pimple on your chin.  And while a nap or a weekend sleep-in does make a difference, it’s the day-to-day sleep deprivation that really promotes degeneration, as well as a body that’s prone to breaking down as well as getting sick.

How much should you be getting?  At least eight hours, more if you’re dealing with health challenges or extra stress.  Think you don’t have enough time?  Consider all the time you’ll lose later when you crash and burn with a cold or the flu – and think of how much more healthy,  happier and less stressed you are when you get more sleep.  (Stress is aging, after all.)

Healthy Habit #2:  Go outside and Avoid Pollution

We get caught in this cycle where we spend our days in air-conditioned offices and evenings in enclosed gyms, failing to get a proper breath of fresh air day in day out.  Our prescription?  Go for a healthy walk, run or a bike ride outdoors for some fresh air and sunshine – and if you must stay indoors, at least crack a window.

Airborne toxins are one cause of health problems, including accelerated aging – but indoor pollution can be just as bad as outdoor, if not worse.  So get out of the house, and if possible, choose less-trafficked streets and tree-filled parks to roam in, as they’ve got lower levels of airborne pollutants 🙂

Healthy Habit #3:  Eat Righthealthy

You really are what you eat.  Every cell in your body is made from the foods you eat, so why not feed your body high-quality, nutritious foods for best results?  After all, your diet has a major impact on the overall health of your body, inside and out.  If you need motivation to eat more fruits and vegetables, caring about your appearance may just be the push you need to fill your plate with more plant foods, begin your journey to starting a healthy lifestyle!

Healthy Habit #4:  Wear Sunglasses

Thats right!  Your skin may naturally begin to wrinkle as you age, but a great healthy habit to get into is to reduce sun damage by slipping on some shades. “Sunglasses are a great defense against wrinkles since they help us not to squint.  Wear them every day, no matter what the weather. Your eyes will thank you,” Loyola University Health System’s dermatology division director Rebecca Tung told ScienceDaily.

But those $5 sunglasses from the gas station just won’t do. You want to wear sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protection to prevent premature wrinkles, since UV light is what breaks down connective tissue in the skin, causing sagging and other issues.  Remember to keep your shades on even in the winter; UV rays are strongest in the summer, but are present all year round.

Healthy Habit #5:  Exercise

Regular exercise offers a range of physical and mental health benefits, including physical fitness, weight control, increased strength and flexibility, and reduced risk of certain illnesses, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.  The type of exercise you do from day to day may vary. Most experts recommend a combination of aerobic exercise and strength training.  Healthy strength-training exercises can include items such as working out with dumbbells or heavier weights; doing resistance exercises like squats, leg lifts, lunges, sit-ups, and push-ups; and taking a pilates or yoga class.

In closing, adopting these 5 simple, healthy habits will go a long way toward improving your overall health.  Not only will you be more healthy, you will be well on your way to preventing serious illness.  Now go get your healthy on and transform your life 🙂

About the Author ()

Originally born and raised in Woburn Massachusetts (love my Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins!) I made my trek northward to the beautiful state of Maine back in October 2003 after marrying my college sweetheart. We began a family in 2004 and I am happy to say that we have 4 happy, healthy, beautiful children that bring an amazing amount of joy to our lives! I am also a type 1 diabetic. Diagnosed back in 2006 (out of the blue), at a routine doctors visit. Diabetes has single handed-ly been the biggest obstacle that I have faced in my life. At the time I had no idea of what a roller coaster ride I would be in for, I mean really, what's a couple finger sticks a day and a couple shots of insulin for food...this will be easy, I got this! Well 2 ER visits later, I quickly found out that this was no joke, and if I wanted to see my little ones grow up, this was something that I needed to take seriously! Little by little as we began to digest all of the information that was being thrown at acting insulin, short acting insulin, lancets, test meters, test strips, ketone sticks, carb counting, food groups, glucagon emergency kits, insulin pumps, glucose monitors...OMG, my head was spinning like a top!! After a couple of crazy years, I can happily say that I am well controlled and feel absolutely amazing! Not to be lost in all of this either is the amazing support of my wife. She has been my rock! She has been with me every step of the way, from 2am finger sticks to helping me change out a failed pump in the middle of a crowded restaurant. She truly is an amazing wife and mom and I can't imaging my life without her love and support- love you babe!
